marriage is no joke.

Yesterday, I thought I had dinner in the bag. At 6pm, I went to the fridge to grab the ingredients for an old Jen family favorite: fried rice. The rice cooker was already humming along, and I started pulling out the ham, onion, soy sauce, peas, and eggs {try not to be jealous, it's delicious}. Traditional side dish of choice? Blueberry muffins. Betty Crocker. From a box. Just add water, oil, and eggs. Don't ask, it just goes, OK?

Um, yeah, the eggs. We didn't have any. So I texted Matt at 6:06 pm just as he was leaving work inquiring on the whereabouts of the eggs. I was hoping for one of three responses:

1) oh yes, I just used up the last egg yesterday {I could stop looking}
2) oh yes, they're right behind the spinach {hallelujah!}
3) I'll pick some up on the way home {what a nice husband!}

Instead, in what will live on in infamy in our house as The Egg Incident, this happened:

From Matt's perspective, his wife had lost her marbles. He was finishing up a long work day, 35 minutes away from home, nowhere near our refrigerator, and facing down a horrendous commute home in the snow, ice, and cold.

From my perspective, I wanted him to read my mind and save the egg-y day.

Good news: we had a good, hard laugh about it after the kids were in bed.

Bad news: marriage is HARD. And sometimes ridiculous. And often infuriating.

I love a good love story. I appreciate young, newlywed love {he never has to go home at night! look at our new blender!} but those days seem like a distant memory. And the first ten years of marriage are filled with all sorts of excitement like new jobs, new houses, new babies...but that ship has sailed too.

We're in the second decade of marriage, and I realized the other day that life is pretty much going to look the way it looks right now for a good long while. No major changes on the horizon, just the day-in and day-out tasks of working hard at being the wife, mom, daughter, friend I was created to be.

It's easy to fall into a rut in your marriage and in the spirit of truth and authenticity, Matt and I have found ourselves staring at each other lately, quite sure the other person is out of their mind, wondering how did we get here?

Luckily I'm married to a man who loves me {and I love him}, and we are firmly committed to each other. Love is one thing, however, like is another.

Half in jest, half in all seriousness, we said to each other on Sunday, let's try to actually like each other this week. Let's laugh together and act playful. Let's talk about things besides the kids and logistics. Let's give each other the benefit of the doubt and believe the best case scenario, instead of leaping instantly to the worst.

The She Reads Truth community started the Soul Detox reading plan this week. Yesterday's passage centered on the 'full armor of God' (a familiar one to most), but the translation in The Message floored me.
"God is strong, and he wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we'll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels.
Be prepared. You're up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it's all over but the shouting you'll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You'll need them throughout your life. God's Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other's spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out."
This is for keeps. A fight to the finish. Be prepared. Pray hard. Keep yours eyes open.

Sometimes I need to be reminded that marriage {like all things that matter in life} is no joke. It's hard work, but it's worth fighting for.

{Now, this poster: that's a joke. They say the couple that laughs together, stays together...or maybe they don't actually say that...I dunno.}

Keep on keeping on, friends. I'll root for you and yours, and you can cheer for us. I'll see you at the finish line.

#SheReadsTruth // Galatians

I just finished up a study on the book of Galatians along with the She Reads Truth community. It was a relatively short one, 15 days in all, with two weekends thrown in {Saturdays are for reviewing/re-reading the week's passages; Sundays are for committing a verse or passage to memory.}

I enjoyed this particular study because there was a devotional included with each days passage. And I know I've said it before, but reading a familiar text in a new translation {The Message} really made it come alive for me in a clear, bold, authentic way.

Galatians is a passionate letter from Paul reminding them of the true and beautiful Gospel. Here's a little peak into some of the truths discovered along the way...

 What's my goal? Popularity or following Jesus?

A central theme of Paul's letter to the Galatians: faith vs. works.
{Spoiler Alert: the answer is faith!}

Redeemed. Set free. Fully Adopted!

 Back to the basics: it all starts with love.

The Message's translation of this passage knocked my socks off.
The alternative way to live? Freely, animated & motivated by God's Spirit.

A prayer: let us not become weary.

I love Paul's challenge here: live creatively.
The world wants us to live a certain way but God's way is so much better.

So, what's next?

If you're ready to get started with a new reading plan, the next She Reads Truth study is on Ephesians and it starts TODAY! You can find all the details on the "how" right here.

#SheReadsTruth // Proverbs

The She Reads Truth community just wrapped up a 31-day study on the book of Proverbs. My reading was a little disjointed at times because of vacations, but I did catch back up and finish strong.

I read through Proverbs using The Message translation this time, and I love the strong, blunt, clear truths and themes that came up time and time again. I love writing the words down and seeing them in my own handwriting. It's not the same as truly knowing the wisdom or actually practicing it or honest-to-goodness-ly living it, but it's a start.

So much goodness packed into each chapter.

Enjoying some quiet time on a rainy, cool summer morning.

At the cottage enjoying some cute company (and the view).

A timely verse for Project Purge // garage sale week.

A main theme of Proverbs: w-i-s-d-o-m. It's worth it's weight in gold.

Back to reality. An 11pm catch-up session.

Something I would go back and tell my younger self if I could:
Learn to receive. It's a beautiful thing.

Thinking a lot about my words and how I use them.
Words kill, words give life.

Love the images here and the challenge to build and furnish well.

Blunt. True. Oy.

Someone else around here loves colored pens too.

The closing proverb is a good one!

#SheReadsTruth // Prayer

I have beyond blessed by my first round of SheReadsTruth

The daily reading plan provided me with the structure I crave, the relatively short readings meant it was a doable commitment, and the community of women I discovered, both near and far, helped me feel accountable and a part of something bigger than myself.

Oh, and it's been a great excuse to play with colored pens.

Here's a quick glimpse, Insta-style, of what I've been learning about prayer:

My original blog post
And my first Instagram #SheReadsTruth share!

The aforementioned colored pens.
I ♥ school supplies.

The Lord's Prayer via The Message.
Our Father: Set the world right.

Continue to cry out: He will stick up for you!

"Holy Father, guard them as they pursue this life."

Incredibly encouraged by women near and far.

The weaker I get, the stronger I become.

Take the Mercy. Accept the Help.

A little friend to keep me company in the early morning hours.

Pray. Thank. Live.

Eyes wide open in gratitude.

Pray. Include everything. Embrace this God-life.

Hurray! We did it!

Up Next: #SheReadsTruth

I'm rounding the corner towards the final stretch of the Bible in 90 Days (just kidding...it's been precisely 315 days, to date).

This "little" Year 32 challenge has been a bit more of a marathon than a sprint. It's kept me in the Bible for many hours this past year, but I've been reading it more as a story and to gain an overview and less as a daily devotion.

As part of HelloMornings, I've re-cracked the spine to Jesus Calling, a great way to start each day, but it's also my second time through this particular devotional.

[Quick HM side note: the summer session ended last week and the early mornings were great for my physical, mental and spiritual health. Fall session begins August 20.]

Now I think I'm ready for something new.
Several weeks ago, I kept seeing phrases like Soul Detox and #SheReadsTruth popping up via "friends" on Instagram and Twitter.

I'm a researcher (analytical beaver here) so I poked around a little. The Soul Detox plan is a 35-day plan found on YouVersion and designed to help you identify what's chipping away at your soul, and what's getting in the way of you becoming the person who God created you to be.

A group of women got together a couple of months ago and created the hastag #SheReadsTruth as a means for an on-line community of women to connect as they journeyed through the same scripture on the same day alongside each other {the whole story here}.

The Soul Detox plan was the first study they used. Living the Surrendered Life was the second.

This Thursday, the #SheReadsTruth community is starting a NEW study {to be announced Thursday morning!}

She Reads Truth provides a Bible reading plan for each day, a weekly truth to memorize (and display), and a community of women to offer encouragement and accountability.

Want to give it a try?
Follow these steps {via She Reads Truth}:

1) Download the YouVersion app on your smart phone. Don’t have a smart phone? Create a login via your web browser

2) The new reading plan will be announced early Thursday (7/12) morning. After it's announced, go to the Plans section + search for it.

3) Stay connected through the She Reads Truth blog or the Twitter or Instagram feeds. If you post regarding the study/community, be sure to tag it with the phrase #SheReadsTruth.

4) Keep a journal. Write down what strikes you. Take a picture. Record your journey. Share what you're learning. Encourage others. Let yourself be encouraged.

5) Read, learn, grow, connect, share, move, journey, see. Each day. Every day. Repeat.

Sound interesting? Doable? Necessary?

Yeah, me too. Hope you'll be joining this new sort of truth-filled community along with me!
